How to make a transparent signature PNG
A transparent signature is an image with nothing but the pen strokes — no paper around them. Placed on a contract, it does not cover the text or the signature line with a white box. It is usually a PNG, because JPG cannot store transparency. Here is how to make one from paper in a couple of minutes, no Photoshop required.
Why the background matters
Snap a photo of your signature, drop it on a document, and a piece of the sheet comes with it: grey from shadows, the edge of a desk, notebook lines. On a white page it shows, and over a signature line or a stamp even more so. With a transparent background only the ink remains, and it looks as if you signed the document itself.
How to photograph your signature
The result depends almost entirely on the original photo:
- Plain white paper. No grid or lines — they are hard to separate from the signature.
- A dark pen. A black or dark-blue gel pen gives crisp contrast. Pencil and light ink come out faint.
- Sign a little larger than usual. Shrinking it later only makes it neater.
- Even light, no shadows. Stand by a window, hold the phone parallel to the paper and keep the shadow of your hand off the signature.
- Center it. You can crop the rest, but do not cut off the ends of the strokes.
Method 1. Right in a signing app
In Signature: sign documents the background is removed for you: when adding a signature, take a photo with the camera or pick one from your library, and the white background turns transparent — only the signature lands on the document. It is kept in My signatures for next time, and the signed document can be saved as PDF, JPG or PNG. Set up your initials the same way.
Method 2. Lift it in Photos on iPhone
On iOS 16 and later you can touch and hold a subject in a photo to copy it without the background. With signatures it is hit or miss: thin strokes are not always recognized as a subject. If it works, tap Copy and paste the signature into a document or a note. If not, use an app or an online tool.
Method 3. Online tools and editors
Search for “transparent signature online” and you will find plenty of tools: upload a photo, get a PNG. They work, but you are sending a sample of your signature to someone else’s server. For the signature you sign contracts with, doing it on your own phone is the safer choice. In Photoshop or GIMP you can remove the background with a color selection — slower, but fully under your control.
Placing a transparent signature
- On a PDF — in a signing app: open the document, pick the signature, drag it onto the line. For the built-in iPhone tools, see how to sign a PDF on iPhone.
- In Word — Insert → Pictures, then set text wrapping to In Front of Text so the signature sits on the line.
- On a photo of a document — open the photo in a signing app as a document and save the result as JPG or PNG.
Keep it safe
A file with your signature is almost like the specimen your bank keeps. Do not post it, do not drop it in open chats and do not leave it in shared folders. And remember that a signature image is not a certificate-based digital signature.
In short
- A transparent signature is a PNG with only the strokes, no background.
- Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper and photograph it in even light.
- The easiest way to remove the background is in a signing app — on your own phone, without uploading anything.
- Guard the file like an ID document.
